Elite sport is full of numbers, but numbers only become meaningful when they are understood in context. A benchmark developed from one athlete population cannot automatically define what excellence should look like for another. Athletes develop differently across regions because of genetics, geography, climate, altitude, nutrition, training culture, and access to sporting infrastructure. Sports science helps make sense of these differences by turning measurement into a deeper understanding of performance.
Distance running is a good example. Kenya and Ethiopia have produced generations of world-class long-distance runners, with athletes developing in environmental and training conditions that are very different from those in India, Europe, or the Americas. Their performance data can be an important reference, but it should not necessarily become the direct benchmark for every athlete elsewhere. The same principle applies across sports, positions, age groups, and levels of competition.
This is where sports science labs can have a significant role within academies, leagues, professional teams, and scouting systems. Instead of depending only on international benchmarks, organisations can build their own performance datasets by consistently measuring physiological, physical, health, recovery, and training parameters. Over time, this can reveal what high performance actually looks like within their athlete population and how those markers change through development.
